Will painted cabinets chip?

Can you paint oak cabinets?

Yes. Oak has open grain, so we offer grain filling to give a smooth finish rather than a textured one.

Can you paint thermofoil or laminate doors?

Only if the surface is sound. If thermofoil is already lifting or peeling, painting will not hold and we will tell you so.

What you are actually buying

Cabinet painting is sold by a lot of people who own a brush. What separates a finish that still looks new in year six from one that is chipping by month eight is not the colour — it is the preparation and the coating chemistry.

We take the doors and drawer fronts off and number every one back to its own opening. They travel to our booth, where they are degreased, scuff-sanded, primed with a dedicated bonding primer and sprayed with two coats of catalysed 2K polyurethane. The boxes are sprayed on site behind full containment. Nothing is brushed and nothing is rolled.

Why catalysed 2K, and not enamel

Latex and alkyd enamels dry. Catalysed 2K polyurethane cures through a chemical reaction, which is why it reaches a hardness the others never do. In practice that is the difference between a door that wipes clean and a door that marks under a coffee mug or sticks to its own frame in a humid August.

What we will tell you not to do

If your boxes are water damaged, if the thermofoil is already lifting, or if what you actually dislike is the door style rather than the colour, painting is the wrong money. We would rather quote you for refacing or new cabinets than take a job that will disappoint you. A refused job costs us less than a failed one.
